SGS and Solomon Financial Press co-organized this seminar to share how to create ESG culture and enhance the CSR performance beyond the HKEx ESG Reporting Guide.

Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) is not only a doctrine of compliance Hong Kong listed companies have to adhere to, but also becomes an increasingly hot topic. By implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as problem solving strategy, investment value and business performance of the company would be enhanced.

In this regard, SGS Hong Kong Limited, together with Solomon Financial Press Limited, co-organized the captioned seminar sharing how to create ESG culture and enhance the CSR performance beyond the HKEx ESG Reporting Guide (the Guide) on December 12, 2019.

The Latest Development of HKEx ESG Reporting Guide

Ms. Zonta Yung, Assistant Business Development Manager of SGS Hong Kong Limited, outlined the recommended requirements of “Consultation Paper on Review of ESG Reporting Guide” (the Consultation Paper) published on May 17, 2019 by HKEx. They are:

  • Explanation of adoption of reporting principles
  • The board governance on ESG
  • Stakeholder engagement & materiality assessment
  • Environmental target set-up
  • Climate Change

She suggested how SGS Hong Kong Limited could help enterprises to prepare for the latest Guide, and introduced a reliable Value-Process-Impact (VPI) model of Strategic Sustainability Benchmark Scheme (SSBS) which provides a more objective and accurate basis to assess the ESG and CSR performance of a company.

Sharing from CUHK CBS and Sino Hotels (Holdings) Limited

In the seminar, our guest speakers also shared their professional views and experiences about CSR. Professor Carlos Lo, Director of Centre for Business Sustainability (CBS), the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) presented the topic “Business Relevance of CSR & SDGs: Engaging Businesses in CSR & Sustainability through the HKBSI”.  He elaborated how enterprises can evaluate their CSR activities as a progressive business model to achieve business sustainability against the Hong Kong Business Sustainability Index (HKBSI).

Ms. Melanie Kwok, Group Senior Sustainability Manager, Sino Hotels (Holdings) Limited, summarized how their group strives to incorporate sustainability initiatives into the operations and management in achieving environmental initiatives and social sustainability during the “Sino Hotels’ Corporate Citizenship” sharing.

Strategic Sustainability Benchmark Scheme (SSBS)

SSBS is a joint effort between the Centre for Business Sustainability, CUHK Business School (CBS), the scheme owner, and SGS, the technical partner. The scheme leverages the expertise of CBS's recognized business sustainability research methodology and framework, and SGS's independent assessment expertise.
