Background:

As of 11 Dec, 2018, terrestrial DAB has covered 21.3% of the population in France, however only 8% of French are equipped with devices that can receive DAB+ radio. On 19 Dec, 2018, French Superior Council of the Audio-Visual (CSA) announced new rules that broadcast receivers placing on the French market shall support the DAB+ function. Products with the DAB+ feature are required to meet the test standards of ETSI EN 303 345 series. Other EU members are also following up this issue.

DAB+ characteristics:

As an upgraded version of DAB. DAB+ employs HE-AAC v2 encoding (i.e. AAC+++), Reed-Solomon coding and MPEG Surround audio format, which greatly improves the transmit efficiency and reception quality and enables the radio station to enhance sound quality.

Effective dates:

Depending on the product type, broadcast receivers without the DAB+ capability will not be allowed to be sold in the French market by the following dates:

  • By March 2019: All new radio receivers able to display of multimedia content
  • By end of December 2019: All other radio receivers, except in-car broadcast receiver
  • By June 2020: All in-car broadcast receivers
