EU To Strengthen Enforcement for Bisphenol A (BPA) in Food Contact Materials
In recent years, Bisphenol A (BPA) had gained a lot of attention and its restriction had been raised by various countries' legislation.
The European Union (EU) has set limits on the amount of BPA migrated in the Food Contact Plastics Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 and notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) in March 2016 (twice) and September 2017 of its intention to further tighten BPA Migration Rules and Regulations Amendment.
On February 14, 2018, the EU announced (EU) 2018/213, the amendment of (EU) No 10/2011, to formally revise BPA migration limit. The major changes in this amendment are:
- Reduce the BPA specific migration limit from 0.6 mg / kg to 0.05 mg / kg; a reduction of 12 times smaller;
- Limit the migration of BPA will be further extended to materials and articles coming in contact with food organic coatings, the same limit is 0.05mg / kg;
- Enterprises are required to provide a written Declaration of Conformity (DoC), which needs to reflect content of (EU) 2018/213 Appendix I
- The prohibition of BPA migrating from plastic materials and articles and organic coatings that come into contact with foods within the scope of (EU) 609/2013 including baby foods, growth formulas, special medical foods, infant formula, dairy drinks, cereals and its processed foods and foods suitable for children as mentioned above
