California Proposition 65 Listing Updated
Proposition 65 (formally titled "The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986") is a California law passed by direct voter initiative in 1986. Its goals are to protect drinking water sources from toxic substances that may cause cancer and birth defects and to reduce or eliminate exposures to those chemicals generally, for example in consumer products, by requiring warnings in advance to those exposures.
An official list of substances covered by Proposition 65 is maintained and made publicly available. Chemicals are added to or removed from the official list based on California's analysis of current scientific information. All substances listed show their known risk factors, an unique CAS chemical classification number, the date they were listed, and, if so, whether they have been delisted.
On October 27, 2017, N, N-dimethyl formamide, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) were added to this list as it causes cancer.
N, N-dimethyl formamide is mainly used as a solvent, in the production of garments and other applied fibers, and as a reagent in industrial coatings, polyimides, paint remover and ink remover; 2 - Mercaptobenzothiazole is mainly used in the manufacture of tires, tubes, tapes, rubber boots and other industrial rubber products. TBBPA is a versatile brominated flame retardant that can be used as a reactive flame retardant to make brominated epoxy resins Phenolic resin and bromine-containing polycarbonate, but also as an additive flame retardant for ABS, HIPS, PP, PBT and other plastic materials. These resins and various materials are widely used in people's daily use of electrical and electronic products (TV sets, washing machines, computers, printers, fax machines, cell phones, etc.).
On 10 November 2017, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were officially added to this list of banned substances.
Perfluorinated compounds (such as PFOA and PFOS) are the basic raw materials for the production of high performance fluoropolymer materials. They are widely used in cleaning agents, coatings, coatings, textiles, leather, electrical and electronic products.
|Substance||CAS #||Side Effects|
|PFOA||335-67-1||Causes Birth Defects|
