Six Sigma: The Ultimate Tool for Reduction of Defects in Production Processes
About Six Sigma
Six Sigma has been well known for enabling manufacturing companies to achieve producing high percentage of 99.997% of defect-free products. Developed by Motorola in 1986, Six Sigma is a set of techniques and tools for process design and improvement. It has been adopted by big manufacturing companies since then and they are able to save huge amount of production cost with it.
DMAIC and DMAIC Process
Under Six Sigma, a production line should not produce more than 3.4 defects per million products manufactured. It could be done by using the DMAIC or DMADV process. DMAIC process is Define-Measure-Analysis-Improvement-Control process in long form, it helps to indentify the main cause of the high defect production rate and rectify them for improvement. While DMADV process, Design-Measure-Analysis-Design-Verify process in long, is used for design and developing a new production processes.
When working on the DMAIC or DMADV process, there are an array of tools and techniques available, including ‘5 Whys technique’ and ‘Fishbone diagram technique. Six Sigma would be often used with Lean, which is another set of techniques and tools to reduce waste by streamlining a production process.
