SGS Hong Kong is glad to announce a NEW Testing Service on the Migration of 21 Heavy Metals per the NEW EU Guideline on Metals and Alloys food contact articles.

In 2013, EU Council of Europe has published a technical guide on metals and alloys used in food contact materials, namely Council of Europe Resolution CM/Res (2013)9.

The new guideline sets specific release limit (SRL) for 21 heavy metals that shall not be migrated in excessive amount from metal food contact articles. Besides, unlike other migration tests on repeated use articles, results from all three extractives are to be considered for compliance:

  • Result of 3rd extractive shall not exceed the SRL;
  • Sum of result of 1st and 2nd extractives shall not exceed 7 times of SRL.

A summary of these heavy metals and their respective SRLs are shown.
