In order to ensure spectacle frames are safe to use. The standard of ISO 12870:2012, Ophthalmic optics – Spectacle frames – Requirements and test methods, specifies fundamental requirements for unglazed spectacle frames designed for use with all prescription lenses. This standard is intended to be harmonized against EU Directive 93/42/EEC for spectacle frames used for prescription lenses.

This International Standard applies to all spectacle frame types, including rimless mounts, semi-rimless mounts and folding spectacle frames as well as spectacle frames made from natural organic materials, but it is not applicable to complete custom-made spectacle frames or to products designed specifically to provide eye protection.

Many modifications of the contents have been made about the 2009 edition, updated test clauses of ISO 12870: 2012 are shown as below:
