Food Safety Committee Endorses Sampling Plan for Nutrition Labeling Compliance Testing
The Food and Drugs (Composition and Labeling) (Amendment: Requirements for Nutrition Labeling and Nutrition Claim) Regulation 2008 will come into enforcement on July 1, 2010. All general pre-packaged food sold in Hong Kong are mandated to have a nutrition label with seven core nutrients and energy. Nutrition claims are allowed but they must follow certain specific conditions.
The Expert Committee on Food Safety under the Center of Food Safety has recently endorsed a sampling plan for nutrition labeling compliance testing. At least 12 individually pre-packaged consumer units were taken randomly from the same food lot and mixed into one single composite sample. The composite sample is then analyzed and the results shall be the estimate of the lot’s nutrient content.
SGS provides Nutrition Label Evaluation services for pre-packaged food to ensure that all nutrition labels and claims comply with the requirements of the regulation amendment. Clients can provide 12 sets of pre-packaged food items to be mixed as a composite sample. One set of results of the composite sample will be provided.
