How to save cost in regard to new nutrition label scheme
Food and Drugs (Composition and Labelling) (Amendment: Requirements for Nutrition Labelling and Nutrition Claim) Regulation 2008 (Amendment Regulation) was enacted by the Legislative Council on 28 May 2008 and will come into effect on 1 July 2010. The information requirement in the nutrition label is now included energy plus seven nutrients (7+1) (namely protein, carbohydrate, fat, saturated fat, trans fat, sodium and sugar). Moisture, ash, dietary fibre, alcohol** and organic acid** tests should also be included in order to fulfill the nutrition labeling requirement.
Some food trades may find it difficult to comply with the new regulation due to the unfavorable testing price. However, there is a suggested solution - an alternative way to save cost.
