SGS Hong Kong is pleased to announce that we have been accredited by Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) on the recent harmonised standard method EN 12472:2005 “Method for the Simulation of Wear and Corrosion for the Detection of Nickel Release from Coated items’ under the Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (HOKLAS). HOKLAS endorsed report will be issued by the laboratory.
SGS Hong Kong Ltd is the FIRST commercial laboratory to obtain accreditation on the standard method EN12472:2005 and BS EN 12472:2005 in Hong Kong. This further expands our position as one of the world’s leading international provider of testing, inspection, verification and certification services.
The similarities and differences between the 2 procedures can be found in our SafeGuardS (Issue 060/06 and 018/07) and the principle of the 2 methods is outlined on the table below.
YearPrinciple     2005The items to be tested are exposed to a corrosive atmosphere before being placed into a tumbling barrel together with a wear medium of abrasive paste and nut shell granules.
The barrel is rotated so as to subject the test pieces to wear from the wear medium.
The items are then tested for nickel release in accordance with EN 1811
1998The items to be tested are exposed to a corrosive atmosphere before being placed into a container together with sintered corundum free of nickel abrasive chips, water and a wetting agent.
The container is rotated so as to subject the test pieces to friction from the mass of abrasive chips. This action smoothes the surfaces and abrades the coatings of the test items.
The items are then tested for nickel release in accordance with EN 1811
