Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the public has increased their awareness on health and hygiene by wearing mask, using disinfection wipes or spray, among others. Despite the receding trend since the outbreak, people are exploring various measures to provide additional protection. Antiviral textiles have become one of the more attractive measures.

Clothing protect us by serving as a barrier between human skin and external environments. However, microbes can in fact easily adhere and grow on untreated textile material due to the large surface area, high moisture level, etc. This turns textile material to be a host for these infectious microbes. For garment and textile products used in healthcare facilities, without appropriate prevention measures, it could lead to serious outcomes like massive transmission of pathogens. There is an immense demand of antiviral function in for medical textile and healthcare application to prevent the spread of disease.

Antiviral textile products are textiles capable of reducing the number of infective virus particles that contact the surface of the textile For healthcare personnel that have direct contact with infected patients daily, this is essential and beneficial for them to reduce the chance to be infected by pathogenic virus. Now the idea for antiviral technology used in public to mitigate COVID-19 is also being discussed.

SGS Hong Kong has developed testing service for Antiviral textile (ISO 18184:2019) to evaluate the antiviral efficacy on the antiviral treated textile fabric.

Based on global market needs, SGS has developed the ISO 18184:2019 test method to evaluate the antiviral efficacy on textile fabrics treated with antiviral treatment. The test compares the remaining infectious virus between the antiviral product test specimen and the control specimen after the virus contacts the specimen for a specified duration. The larger antiviral activity value shows the better antiviral function on the specimen.
