What To Expect In The EN 71-2:2020 Safety of Toys - Part 2: Flammability Update

EN 71-2 – Flammability specifies the categories of flammable material that are prohibited in all toys. The standard focuses on reducing the risk of burn injuries. CEN has just published a new version: EN 71-2:2020, which is expected to be listed in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) in 2021 to replace the EN 71-1:2011+A1:2014.

EN 71-2 – Flammability specifies the categories of flammable material that are prohibited in all toys. The standard focuses on reducing the risk of burn injuries.  CEN has just published a new version: EN 71-2:2020, which is expected to be listed in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) in 2021 to replace the EN 71-1:2011+A1:2014.

In the scope, it makes a clarification that paper and paperboard hats without embellishments or attachments are excluded from the requirement of Toys to be worn on the head.  

Key Update:
The significant update in the requirement for Toy disguise costumes and Toys intended to be worn by a child in play and the test method.

“… Unlike earlier versions of EN 71-2, this standard now intentionally aims to test materials that contain features like seams, trims, appliques and similar embellishments, provided there is sufficient material available in the test specimen ….”

Toy disguise costumes and toys intended to be worn by children in play which contain loose stuffing that fall out are tested as per the test method of soft-filled toy in order for the soft-filled parts being tested in a suitable way.

Clarification that toy disguise costumes should be washed regardless if they contain mechanisms that may be damaged by washing.
