MORE ABOUT THE STANDARD

In 2012, International Standards Organization issued ISO 20121:2012 Event Sustainability Management Systems—Requirements with Guidance for Use, which was first adopted at the London Olympics. It stipulates sustainability guidelines for events, achieves positive economic, environmental and social impacts of large events at a relatively low cost, and provides guidelines and optimal methods for event organizers, event performers and all event suppliers.

ISO 20121 is applicable to all types of organizations. Currently, it is applied extensively in exhibition industry, sports industry, hotels and conference centers, leisure and entertainment industry, performances and celebrations, various indoor and outdoor venues and local governments (generally referred to as MICE industry). These types of organizations, for one thing, establish sustainability management system based on their own characteristics, and, for another, convey sustainability concepts and requirements through sustainable procurement to the relevant members of the supply chain, thereby driving sustainable development in all walks of life.

China has adopted such international standard and transformed it into the national standard GB/T 31598-2015, which has been formally implemented as of January 1, 2016.
