China Waving Flag

Food contact materials are all materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, such as packaging and containers, kitchen equipment, cutlery and dishes. These can be made from a variety of materials including plastics, rubber, paper and metal.

The safety of food contact materials must be evaluated as chemicals can migrate from the materials into food. Food contact materials and products may affect the odour, taste and colour of the food during contact with food, may release a certain amount of toxic and harmful chemical components such as heavy metals and plasticizers. These chemical components migrate to the food and are then ingested by the human body. When the amount exceeds a certain amount, it will endanger human health.

In 2016, National Health Commission of the People ‘s Republic of China has published new food contact material regulation to regulate the quality of food contact materials and had also increased the strength of market surveillance and supervision to protect consumer health.

On December 28th, 2018, The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) issued an annual report on food contact materials related products for 2018. A total of 2,304 batches of plastic, paper and/or cardboard, glass and metal products from 2,218 enterprises were inspected. Among those inspected, 102 batch products from 4 different product categories did not comply with the quality requirements.
