ISO 50001 the Energy Management System (EnMS) standard provides requirements for a systematic, data-driven process, focused on continually improving energy performance to significantly cut energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions, and sustain those savings over time.

At the Paris Climate Conference (COP21) in December 2015, 195 countries adopted the first-ever universal, legally binding global climate deal. The agreement sets out a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2°C. Governments agreed to come together every 5 years to set more ambitious targets as required by science and report to each other, and the public on how well they are doing to implement their targets. The U.N. approach has been to get countries to offer cuts in emissions and increases in renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency, or carbon sinks. An aim of progressively decarbonizing the global economy can provide a clearer signal to markets to shift long-term investments toward energy efficiency and other lower-carbon alternatives.

Published in 2011, ISO 50001 has become increasingly important since its release six years ago. A total of 20,216 certificates for ISO 50001 were issued by the end of 2016, according to ISO. The growth of ISO 50001 is expected to accelerate as an increasing number of companies integrate ISO 50001 into their corporate sustainability strategies and supplier requirements. ISO 50001 EnMS is a proven framework, helping industrial facilities, commercial facilities, or entire organizations to manage energy – including all aspects of energy use.

The latest version of the energy management system (EnMS) standard, ISO 50001:2018, was published on August 21, 2018. Learn more about the new version.
