With reference to the United Nations, there are 20,000,000 to 50,000,000 tons of abandoned electronic wastes (includes mobile phone, tablet, notebook, etc.) recorded annually in the world. Who is responsible to handle the electronic waste? Will inappropriate electronic waste handling lead to data security risk, environmental pollution and personal health issue?

Vannex International Limited (Vannex) is a recycling company which handles discarded computer monitor and electronic waste. To demonstrate its commitment in environmental protection, occupational health & safety and information security as well as exceeding stakeholders’ requirement, Vannex joins Responsible Recycling (R2) certification.

R2 is a universal principle which associates with management and operation requirements for the electronic waste collection and recycling industries. It aims at promoting and unifying electronic waste handling so as to advocate legal and responsible trade. R2 requires the electronic waste industry to set up system like ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System to monitor environmental protection and occupational health behaviors. The main requirements of R2 are: a) develop systems to manage the environment, occupational health and safety and downstream vendors in the supply chain; b) develop recycling strategy for the end-of-life electronic products; c) fulfill legal requirements in daily operation, for example, focus material and data destruction. Therefore, a company which establishes R2 system can satisfy the public expectation of the environmental protection and data security. It can also provide legal and social responsible services to its clients.

Vannex is certified in conjunction with accredited ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. This explains the establishment of R2 allows Vannex to identify relevant risks regarding the environmental and occupational health and safety from electronic waste handling. It also accounts for a traceability of focus materials during its electronic waste dismantling, storage, protection and delivery. The integration also makes the Plan-Do-Check-Act mechanism to implement into the management systems becoming more effective and efficient. Importantly, it keeps driving Vannex to consider the legal compliance when developing R2 system. This works well in reducing the possibility of high risk occurrence.

Vannex gives a good management demonstration for the electronic waste recycling industry by certifying with an accredited R2 certification and it helps to develop the recycling industry in a healthy manner. This certification also helps Vannex to become a more responsible and ethical company. As an appointed R2 certification body, SGS witnesses Vannex’s commitment in protecting the environment and maintaining a safe workplace.
