On 21 September 2012, the Government enacted the Buildings Energy Efficiency Ordinance (BEEO) (CAP 610). The Ordinance requires the owners of commercial buildings which include the commercial portions of composite buildings like shopping malls under residential storeys, to carry out energy audit every 10 years. Since 90% of total electricity consumption came from buildings, it is believed that the enforcement of BEEO can help to reduce energy consumption of buildings from the areas of air-conditioning, lighting, electrical and lift & escalator installations.
