On 7 December 2013, Commission Regulation (EU) No 1272/2013 about the expansion of restriction scope of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in REACH was officially published. Limits on PAH content in consumer goods including electrical and electronic products are added.

PAHs are classified as carcinogens. They are often found in petroleum products, rubber, plastics, lubricants, anti-rusting oil and incomplete combustion product of organic compounds. They may also be found in the plastic and rubber parts of electrical and electronic products as residue from the manufacturing process.

Considering the hazards of PAHs, the German GS Mark certification limits the presence of PAHs in products. The expansion of PAHs restriction scope in REACH imposes more stringent requirements on electrical and electronic equipment to be exported to the EU.

As the world’s leading third-party testing company, SGS offers professional testing services on PAHs. SPECIAL OFFER is available for clients who want to demonstrate product compliance towards both REACH and GS Mark PAH requirements on electrical and electronic products.
