1. China has revised the Environmental Protection law of the PRC (amendment)
Apr 24, 2014, the amendment of the Environmental Protection law of People's Republic of China has been finally approved in the 12 Session of Standing Committee of the National People's Congress 8 conference and will come into force on Jan 1, 2015.  This is the first time it has been revised significantly in the past 25 years. The content is extended from 10 articles to 70 articles and has strengthened the punishment of environmental pollution.  Click here to view the original

2. Sichuan released the CSR Blue Book
Apr 13, 2014, Sichuan published the Blue Book of Research Report on Corporate Social Responsibility in Sichuan (2013-2014).  It is the first regional CSR Blue Book in China.  The Blue Book introduced the current situation of corporate social responsibility in Sichuan and provided CSR solutions for major enterprises on food, drug and environment protection.

3. Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Qinghai province updated the minimum wage standards
From Apr to May 2014, Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Qinghai province had updated the minimum wages standards.  After the latest adjustment, monthly minimum wages in Beijing is RMB1560, Tianjin is RMB1680 and Shanghai is the highest at RMB1820.  And the monthly minimum wages in Qinghai are RMB1250, RMB1260 and RMB1270 respectively.  For more information, please visit SGS Minimum Wages Map

4. Thousands of shoe-factory workers went on strike in Guangdong
Apr 15, 2014, thousands of shoe-factory workers went on strike in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, demanding for full social benefits & housing allowance.  According to the local Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, an instruction was given to the shoe-factory for rectifications within a certain period of time.

5. 6 girls naked to protest against employment discrimination in Guangzhou
Apr 22, 2014, 6 girls encountered gender discrimination during job application in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.  They went naked with body painting and protested against employment discrimination at the gate of one university.

6. An electrical appliance factory was on fire in Zhejiang
Apr 21, 2014, an electrical appliance factory which produced refrigerators and washing machines was on fire, causing 5000㎡ fire area in Zhejiang Province.  Fire started in the room where Freon was stored.  Freon which is highly explosive under high temperature had caused a quick spread of fire in the factory.  At present, the accident is under further investigation.

7. 8 workers died after the explosion of a chemical factory in Jiangsu
Mar 3, 2014, 8 workers of a chemical factory died and 9 workers were injured after an explosion in Jiangsu Province.  After the explosion, the nine-storey building of the factory collapsed into three layers.  The accident is under investigation.

International News
8. The first International Water Stewardship Standard was released
Recently, the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) released the International Water Stewardship Standard version 1.0, which is the first global framework to promote sustainable freshwater usage.  It clearly defines criteria for good water stewardship and is designed to align with other sustainability initiatives and support independent certification with different levels of recognition.  The Standard was developed through a four-year discussion by the stakeholder.

9. Collective actions required to increase and improve women’s work opportunities
Recently, UN Women and the UN Global Compact joinly organized the 6th Annual Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) meeting.  The topics were Gender Equality and the Global Jobs Challenge, aimed to increase and improve women’s work opportunities. Nearly 700 CEOs, representing a group of leading global corporations, have already made a public commitment to support and implement the WEPs.
