Compliance with the EMC Directive (2004/108/EC) is a mandatory requirement for CE marking within the European Union (EU). To legally sell the goods in the EU market, all electrical / electronic products under the EMC directive must be tested with the corresponding harmonized EMC standards before affixing the CE Mark.

Similarly, compliance with the FCC regulations is a mandatory requirement for all electrical / electronic products to be legally sold in the US market.

SGS accreditations & services

SGS IECC is a wholly owned subsidiary of SGS Group from 2011. It is a well-established and independent laboratory providing third-party testing services. It is a HOKLAS accredited laboratory in Hong Kong. In addition, IECC has been accredited as a Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) to provide test services to the industry for Declaration Of Conformity (DOC) and Certification under Part 15 and 18 of the Federal Communications Commission’s Rules (FCC). Our test facilities are listed by FCC and Industry Canada.

EMC and FCC requirments

In fact, the harmonized EMC standards are arranged on the product basis and can be grouped into two different sets.

One set is the EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) standards which define the technical limits for noise emissions from electrical / electronic products, such as EN55014-1 for household appliances, EN55013 for Audio / Video products, EN55015 for lighting products and etc.

Another set is the EMS (Electromagnetic Susceptibility) standards which define the minimum abilities of noise immunity, such as EN55014-2 for household appliances, EN55020 for Audio / Video products, EN61547 for lighting products and etc.

The FCC regulations with only EMI requirements are applied to different electrical / electronic products. FCC Part 15 is applied to Radio Frequency Devices and FCC Part 18 is applied to Industrial, Scientific and Medical Equipment.

Why is electromagnetic compatibility so important

EMI and EMS are not only the legal requirements but also part of the product performance concerning the ability of an appliance compatible with other products. While the electrical / electronic product is operating, it inevitably generates certain amounts of Electro-Magnetic (EM) noises to pollute the radio frequency spectrum, diminish the performance of electrical products or even harm to people’s health. Without the proper EMC regulatory, the EM noises will bring about some unpredictable hazards or disasters in our daily life, such as Essential communications may be disrupted by the noises emitted from the digital products and the radio products;

  •  Essential communications may be disrupted by the noises emitted from the digital products and the radio products;
  • Household appliances may be triggered on accidentally by the noises from standby mode in electricity supply.

To avoid such the above problems, EU and US authority launched the EMC and FCC regulations to ensure different electrical / electronic products to mutually operate in the same environment without causing any abnormal operations or harmful accidents.
