Special Offer - 20% off for EMC Testing
Compliance with the EMC Directive (2004/108/EC) is a mandatory requirement for CE marking within European Union (EU). To legally sell the goods in the EU market, all products under the EMC Directive must be tested with the corresponding harmonized EMC standards before affixing the CE Mark.
The EMC Directive covers all electrical/electronic products no matter they are AC-operated or battery-operated. As long as a product contains the electrical and/or electronic components, it could cause electromagnetic interference or the operation thereof could be affected by this interference. Hence, the EMC Directive simultaneously regulates: the amount of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) emitted from a product and the degree of insusceptibility to electromagnetic interference in its working environment.
In fact, the harmonized EMC standards are arranged on the product basis and can be grouped into two different sets. One set is the EMI standards which define the technical limits for noise emissions from electrical/electronic products, such as EN55014-1 for household appliance, EN55013 for A/V product, EN55015 for lighting product and etc. Another set is the EMS (Electromagnetic Susceptibility) standards which define the minimum abilities of noise immunity, such as EN55014-2 for household appliance, EN55020 for A/V product, EN61547 for lighting product and etc.
Although the EMC Directive covers a wide range of electrical/electronic products, it is not applicable to the products for which separate Directives exist with their own EMC criteria, such as:
- Medical equipment under the Medical Devices Directive;
- RF product under the R&TTE Directive;
- Immunity-related product in motor vehicles under the Automotive Directive.
Why Electromagnetic Compatibility is so Important
Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) is not only the legal requirements but also it is a part of the product performance concerning the ability of an appliance compatible with other products. While the electrical/electronic product is operating, it inevitably generates certain amounts of Electro-Magnetic (EM) noises to pollute the radio frequency spectrum, diminish the performance of electrical products or even harm to people’s health. Without the proper EMC regulatory, the EM noises will bring about some unpredictable hazards or disasters in our daily life, such as:
- Essential communications may be disrupted by the noises emitted from the digital products and the radio products;
- Household appliances may be triggered on accidentally by the noises in electricity supply.
To avoid such the above problems, EU authority launched the EMC regulations to ensure different electrical/electronic products to mutually operate in the same environment without causing any abnormal operations or harmful accidents.
