Is it safe to use toothpaste?
Recently, some toothpaste products and raw materials of glycerin containing high levels of Diethylene Glycol (DEG) were found in the markets. Upon chronic exposure to DEG, consumers may suffer from kidney failure, Central Nervous System disorders, respiratory hardness, or even lethal consequences. Unintentional swallowing or ingestion of toothpaste containing DEG is highly concerned by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well. Currently, they have issued an import alert to prevent toothpaste products containing the poisonous chemical Diethylene Glycol (DEG) from entering the US.
Public awareness is not only raised in toothpaste industry, but also in pharmaceutical industry. In order to reduce the production cost, unethical suppliers or manufacturers have often found using DEG to substitute glycerine - a sweetener commonly used worldwide in liquid on over-the-counter and prescription drug products.
