According to the research released by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) on 9 May, 2012, Hong Kong is the world's 10th largest trading economy. Hong Kong plays an important role in handling Chinese expanding external trade. In 2011, Hong Kong handled about 14% and 13% of the Chinese exports (US$258 billion) and imports (US$220 billion) respectively. It is believed that these figures will rise with the emphasis of the advocate of domestic needs and the upgrade of transportation system in Chinese 12th 5-Year Plan.
